When I wrote about the removal of Reddit’s RSS feeds, I overlooked the fact that Feedly uses Reddit’s API to retrieve articles from subreddits. The folks at Feedly expect this functionality to continue working after Reddit removes their feeds. Therefore, Unread customers syncing with a Feedly account can avoid the effects of the feed removal.

How Reddit Works in a Feedly Account

A Feedly user can connect their Feedly account to their Reddit account from within Unread. This is available in the Accounts pane of the Settings window on Mac, or under Account Settings on iPhone and iPad. It is also available in the Feedly web interface.

On the left is the Accounts pane of a Settings window on Mac. A Feedly account is selected. The right side of the window shows that the Feedly account is connected to a Reddit account. On the right is the settings screen for a Feedly account on iPhone. Similarly, it shows that the Feedly account is connected to a Reddit account.

When you search for a feed by subreddit name in a Feedly account, Unread finds feeds whose URLs have the host “api.reddit.com”.

These are not really RSS feeds. The “api.reddit.com” host tells Feedly to use the Reddit API to find articles for that subreddit. Feed subscriptions with “api.reddit.com” hosts should continue to work in Feedly accounts.

If a Feedly account is subscribed to a traditional Reddit RSS feed (one whose URL does not use the host “api.reddit.com“), that subscription will stop working after Reddit removes their feeds.

Changes to Unread

I still intend to remove the ability to find Reddit feeds for other account types in Unread after Reddit removes their feeds. However, that functionality will remain for Feedly accounts.
